How to Overcome Barriers and Become a Fitness Person

So you are browsing social media, and maybe you see a post of someone in the gym and think to yourself, “wow, I want to be like that: she/he is fit, has the motivation to get to the gym, and has so much confidence in her/himself. I want to be a part of that”. In this short guide, I will share some easy tips on how to become “that” fitness guy/girl.

First of all, you’re here! Step number one is complete.

One of the biggest misconceptions of the fitness industry is that you are just made for it. When the truth of the matter is, many people who are “gym rats” are not made for it; they may not even have the motivation to get there, but what they do have is discipline. Many sleepy mornings, wanting to hit the snooze button but having the discipline to

Step number two: What are your interests?

There’s nothing worse than spending your precious free time doing something you hate (especially if you are going to spend your hard-earned money on it) because you feel like you have to. Here are some things you may like to try before going all in:

If you want the gym, do you have a friend who frequents a local gym? Many offer a free guest pass, and going with a friend may decrease the stress about going in and not knowing what to do.

If not, maybe try a free fitness class or look online for promotions. Fitness classes are a great way to meet new people and find resources.

If you want something outdoors, try walking before you run. Have a friend you frequent for lunch with? Try a coffee in the park. You can also look at your local online groups to see if there are already walking/running meetups.

Another avenue can be intramural sports. Many online groups and family gyms host intramural sports both indoors and outdoors, and may be a good place to start!

Step number three:  Do the thing!

The biggest hurdle truly is getting out the door. Sign up for that class, go for that walk with a friend, join your grandma at yoga. You can do this!

I hope that this short blog provides a little inspiration for the person looking to start a fitness journey. Fitness is for EVERYONE, and that includes you!
